Rock Climbing in Europe

The area where I live has some stunning climbing: single pitch limestone venues in the Arve valley running west from Chamonix are accessible often throughout the year.

Desert Rock: Wadi Rum or Red Rocks

Desert rock is a stunning climbing experience: guaranteed good weather, rock that’s generally some of the best around, an environment that is harsh and beautiful…

Big Wall Experience

Big wall climbing is a super-intense experience. Living in a vertical environment for day after day requires some very particular techniques and the learning curve can be as steep as the rock!

Rock Climbing

I’m often asked what guides do on their days off, and for this guide it’s rock climbing! The area where I live is stacked full of awesome rock climbing, from single pitch sports routes on perfect limestone, through to multi pitch rock routes in a mountain environment.

I also travel away from Chamonix for both guiding and my own pleasure, taking in places like the Gorge du Tarn in the south of France, Wadi Rum in Jordan and the big walls in the USA – the granite of Yosemite or sandstone of Zion in Utah or Red Rocks in Nevada.

We can structure a rock climbing trip in the same way as my alpine guiding: either as a teaching experience or as a way of getting around some amazing bits of rock for fun!

As a general rule, the best ratio to work at is at 1 or 2 on rock routes, almost whatever the length or the technical difficulty.

There are rock climbing venues to enjoy throughout the year by carefully choosing the latitude and the altitude!

Arnad in Val d'Aosta

Just over an hour through the Mont Blanc tunnel, there is a cliff 8 pitches high with a bar at the base and the top. Viva la bella Italia!
