Springtime in Austria

Here we go on a 3 week tour of Austrian ski touring with the Eagle Ski Club: the last 6 days in the Silvretta have given us some blizzard conditions on day 1 (shades of last year´s season), an ascent of the Piz Buin in challenging semi-Scottish weather and some great powder on the last day coming down from the Wiesbadner hut.

More snow forecast for the Stubai this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Bring it on....

Stubai Tour 21 - 28 March

A rare week – we completed the tour, some of the best snow ever, a wonderful group and a brilliant guide,
Thank you

Stubai Tour 21 -28 March

Thanks Andy for a great week and for keeping faith in our abilities and looking after us when the going got tough. The thought of having to retreat from the Daunjoch was not palatable (excuse the mixed metaphor) and our reward was powder all the way down into the Stubai Glacier resort. Fabulous!

Swift exit from the Tirol

HUGE amounts of snow in the Tirol: spontaneous wet snow avalanches everywhere, major roads closed, so back to Silvretta as a safe bet in more ways than one. With a strong team capable of doing the Tirol traverse, we´re getting some big days and steep descents in.

Now in the Jamtal hut after a tour over the wonderfully named Schapfenspitze with a steep south couloir.

All good stuff....

Stubai Circuit

Just back from week 2, going anti-clockwise round the Stubai valley with another Eagle Ski Club team. A good day on Sunday to get into the luxurious Franz Senn hut, then the weather pattern of wind and cloud set in for the week. The team have performed superbly in challenging conditions, with lots of wind crust and poor visibility, especially crossing the Schwarzenbergjoch to the Amberger hut and then on the next day over the Daunjoch to the Dresdener hut. Both of those were reminiscent of Scottish winter....

On the plus side, we had great powder skiing on the Thursday and Friday, with acres of fresh in the Stubai glacier ski resort. I will DEFINITELY be back here at some stage...

Now off to Matrei for the Hochtirol Haute Route. Fingers crossed for a better weather forecast!

Eagle Silvretta 2008

I never had to dig my skis out before when I was still (a) upright, and (b) attached to them. But trying to ski in setting concrete up to my hips (aka heavy wind-compressed powder) was just one of the key memories of this year’s Silvretta tour. Others include Andy’s bravura displays of precision route finding in winter blizzard conditions using magic counting beads; making the summit of Piz Buin; the excellent company of other Eagles; and comparative tasting of zwetschgen vs. pflümli liqueur in the Wiesbadener hut (pflümli has the edge). Andy thanks as always for a stunning adventure - Peter
