This Eagle Ski Club tour goes clockwise round this famous area from Vent, with a theme of comfortable huts, easy pace and modest vertical intervals.

This tour, which we had to bin due to avalanche risk in March 2009, will start in Matrei in the Virgental and finish with an ascent of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak. Physically challenging ascents with proportionate reward on the descents!

There are consecutive days with ascents of over 1500m, so good fitness and ski ability are important. Set against this are some big descents to comfortable huts for which Austria is renowned.

This Chamonix Zermatt Haute Route has a mid week start and is spread over ten days to maximise chances of completing the itinerary.

By starting on a Wednesday, we avoid the main pulse of Haute Routers starting at the weekend. Typically hut occupancy is at about 20% of maximum by doing this, compared to 100% when starting at the weekend. In addition, by assigning 10 days we have 3 days in reserve to reach Zermatt in the event of bad weather. If all goes smoothly and we reach Zermatt in 7 days, we have the option of continuing on to Saas and beyond.
